TOAgen Feature Overview

A guided overview of the core features that help legal teams create faster, easier, and more reliable Tables of Authorities inside Microsoft Word.

TOAgen improves the Table of Authorities workflow by combining Word-native compatibility with practical tools for citation marking, cleanup, TOA management, navigation, formatting, and deeper authority review. Instead of forcing users into a foreign system, TOAgen works inside Microsoft Word and gives legal teams better control over one of the most tedious parts of legal document preparation.

This overview highlights many of TOAgen’s most important features, but it is not intended to list every command or capability in the product.

Citation marking and core workflow

These features help legal teams identify citations, mark them more efficiently, and generate the initial Table of Authorities without relying on Word’s slower manual process.

Mark All Citations

Scans the document for legal citations and marks them using Word’s native TA fields. TOAgen identifies long citations first, then works through related short citations, helping teams avoid the manual hunt-and-peck process that makes TOA so time-consuming.

Mark Citation

Let's users manually mark citations one at a time when precise, hands-on control is needed. This is useful for special cases or citations that users want to confirm individually.

Manage Short Cites to Exclude

Helps users review possible short-cite candidates and exclude generic or misleading strings before they are marked. This improves short-cite accuracy and reduces cleanup later.

Insert TOA and Update TOA

Insert TOA generates the Table of Authorities from the marked citations in the document. Update TOA refreshes the TOA as citations change, and users do not need to place the cursor inside the TOA first.

Citation cleanup and control

These features help legal teams improve citation quality, manage variants, and clean up the authority set before filing.

Edit Long Citation

Let's users open and revise the long citation text behind a marked authority so the TOA stays accurate and consistent. This is especially useful when a citation needs refinement after initial marking.

Unify Citations

Combines citation variants that refer to the same authority into a single, standardized TOA entry. This helps reduce duplicate or inconsistent entries in the final TOA.

Unify Multi-parts

Merges split citation components into one complete authority when the title and citation details appear in different places. This is especially valuable for citation-heavy legal writing where authorities are sometimes introduced in pieces.

Withhold Citation and Remove Citation

Withhold Citation temporarily removes a citation from the TOA without deleting it, while Remove Citation removes the marked citation entirely. These tools help teams refine the authority set with more control.

Ignore Section

Excludes selected sections from citation marking so TOAgen skips text that should not feed the TOA. This is helpful for quoted material, non-relevant sections, or other text that should not be treated as part of the authority set.

Review, drafting, and navigation tools

These features help legal teams review citations more efficiently, move through the document faster, and work in a more practical draft-as-you-go workflow.

Goto TOA, Navigate¶ and Navigate

These tools help users move quickly between the document and the Table of Authorities. Navigate and Navigate¶ also make it easier to review citation locations in context.

Next TA Field and Previous TA Field

Help users cycle through marked citations in the document and footnotes. These tools are useful for sequential review, cleanup, and verification.

Create TOA Draft

Extracts citations into a separate Word document as a list with categories for review, verification, and cleanup. This gives teams a clean list of authorities that is easier to inspect than the full brief.

Create TOA Draft from PDF and Clean PDF

Help teams work with PDFs converted to Word, which is especially useful when reviewing opposing counsel’s filings. These tools repair broken citation structure and create a more usable draft for citation review and TOA work.

Draft-as-you-go workflow

TOAgen supports building the Table of Authorities throughout the drafting process, rather than waiting until the end. That helps surface issues earlier, spreads the work out, and reduces last-minute TOA pressure.

Formatting and TOA management

These features help users manage the appearance, structure, and final presentation of the TOA.

TOA Styles

Gives users access to commands that control the formatting of the TOA title, headings, and entries. This helps teams keep the final TOA polished and consistent.

Unify Case Title

Let's users apply consistent formatting to case titles in the TOA, helping the final Table of Authorities look cleaner and more uniform.

Highlight Citations and Remove Highlight

Make it easier to see marked citations in the document during review, then remove that highlighting when the document is ready for final use.

Change Category, Change Category Title, Remove Category, and Reorder TOA Categories

Help users control the structure and labeling of TOA categories so that the final TOA better matches the document's preferred organization.

Custom passim Threshold

Let's users control when passim replaces page references, giving them more flexibility over how the final TOA presents authorities and page usage.

Advanced analysis and productivity features

These features extend TOAgen beyond basic TOA creation, supporting deeper review, stronger adoption, and better productivity over time.

Authority Utilization

Helps users turn the completed authority set into a deeper analysis. Depending on the selected workflow, TOAgen can create AI prompts for tools such as ChatGPT or Copilot, or generate utility reports directly in Word. These workflows use citations rather than the surrounding narrative text, which keeps the analysis focused on the authority set itself.

Jurisdiction-aware citation detection

Improves how TOAgen identifies and marks citations by using document context to determine the likely primary jurisdiction and detect additional jurisdictions throughout the document. Version 1.0 supports a defined set of jurisdictions and still provides useful fallback marking outside current coverage.

Built-in help and contextual training

TOAgen includes ribbon-button help, ribbon-group help, keyboard shortcut guidance, and in-product learning support. This helps reduce training burden and makes it easier for users to become productive inside the workflow.

Keyboard shortcuts and modifier-key features

TOAgen includes both standard keyboard shortcuts and modifier-key shortcuts that help users move faster through citation work, navigation, and review. These features make productivity gains part of the experience rather than an afterthought.

The result

Taken together, these features give legal teams a more practical, more controllable, and more efficient way to handle one of the most frustrating tasks in legal document preparation. TOAgen does not just help users create a Table of Authorities. It helps them manage citation quality, improve their workflow, reduce the training burden, and work more confidently in Microsoft Word.

Conclusion

TOAgen brings together citation marking, cleanup, drafting support, navigation, formatting, and authority analysis inside a single Word-native workflow. For legal teams that want a faster, easier, and more reliable way to manage Tables of Authorities, these features work together to create a much stronger overall process.
